Niagara Falls Tours from Toronto

The Falls sit 131 km from downtown Toronto, about 1 hour 40 minutes each way on the QEW without traffic. What separates one Niagara Falls tour from Toronto from another is not the drive. It is whether the boat is in the price, whether you ride a 7-seat van or a 44-seat coach, and whether the day adds Niagara-on-the-Lake or stays out late for the lit-up Falls.

Quick answer The most-reviewed tour, the boat catch and the top rated

The Queen Tour coach day is the most reviewed Niagara Falls tour from Toronto, 4.8 from 4,049 reviews from $52. On most tours the from price buys the seat, the guide and free time, and the boat is an upgrade. A few tours include the boat in the base price. Top rated is the Truexperiences Sprinter, 4.9 from 354 reviews, boat included, $183.56.

Key takeaways

  • Most reviewed: the Queen Tour coach day, 4.8 from 4,049 reviews, 3-4 hours at the Falls from $52 → see the card
  • Boat catch: most from prices leave out the boat. Three tours include it → what the price buys
  • Top rated: the Truexperiences Sprinter, boat in the price, 8 guests on average → see the card
  • The drive is 131 km each way, about 1 hour 40 minutes without traffic, so day tours give 2.5-4 hours at the Falls → the day broken down

Niagara Falls Tours from Toronto Compared

Every tour here stays on the Canadian side and covers the 131 km drive from Toronto. The from price is the lowest adult rate on the listing. On most tours that buys the seat, the guide and free time at the Falls, not the attraction tickets. The booking platform handles payment and every listing has free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Each card says exactly what the price includes and what costs extra.

What the Tour Price Includes

Boat and Journey: In or Out

On most tours the lowest price buys the coach seat, the guide and free time at the Falls, and nothing else. The boat cruise and Journey Behind the Falls come as a higher package or are bought on the day. BG Tours sells its extras from the guide in cash only: boat $55, Journey Behind the Falls $30, Skylon Tower $23, zipline $85 and a helicopter ride $177. Chariots of Fire sells boat and Skylon tickets from the driver. The boat is in the base price only on the See Sight premium van (boat, Journey Behind the Falls and Skylon Tower, $136.45), the Truexperiences Sprinter (boat, $183.56) and the See Sight helicopter day (boat, Journey and a 12-minute helicopter flight, $338.61). The boat is seasonal and each listing gives its own dates, swapping in another ticket such as Journey Behind the Falls or Niagara Takes Flight when it is closed. Read the boat tour guide and the Journey Behind the Falls guide for what each ticket gets you.

What the Upgrade Is Worth

The official ticket prices show what a package adds. The Niagara City Cruises boat costs C$47.95 (about $33.85) for an adult before 13% HST, which makes C$54.18 (about $38.25), and C$32.95 for a child aged 3-12. Journey Behind the Falls costs C$33 (about $23.30) for an adult and C$21.50 for a child.

Buying both at the gate therefore adds C$87.18 (about $61.55) per adult with the boat tax included. BG Tours' guide sells the boat for $55 and Journey Behind the Falls for $30, in cash, and the listing does not say whether those are Canadian or US dollars. Against that, the See Sight van at $136.45 already carries the boat, Journey Behind the Falls and the Skylon Tower.

  • Boat: C$47.95 (about $33.85) plus 13% HST, April to November
  • Journey Behind the Falls: C$33 (about $23.30), open every day of the year
  • A poncho comes with every boat ticket

How Much of the Day Is the Falls

The honest math behind every one of these days. It answers whether Niagara Falls works as a day trip from Toronto.

The Drive and the Hours at the Falls

Union Station to Table Rock at the Horseshoe Falls is 131 km by the QEW, about 1 hour 40 minutes with no traffic. Queues on the QEW add time, worst on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading to Niagara and on Sunday evenings heading back. That makes an 8-10 hour day out of Toronto, and inside it most tours give you 2.5-4 hours at the Falls. So yes, Niagara Falls is a real day trip from Toronto, and a coach tour is the simplest way to do it without driving. See how far Niagara Falls is from Toronto for the route detail and whether a day trip is worth it for the trade-offs.

If You Would Rather Take the Train

GO Transit runs trains from Union Station to Niagara Falls all year, with the most trips on weekends. Fares are distance-based and paid with PRESTO or a contactless card. The station sits in the north of the city, away from the Falls, and the WEGO bus connects it.

The full picture is in the train guide.

What You See on the Canadian Side

Every tour on this page stays on the Canadian side, which faces all three falls. No border crossing on any of them, and the US side needs a passport.

The Falls and the Ticketed Sights

The Horseshoe Falls drops about 57 m (188 ft) along a crest about 670 m (2,200 ft) wide. The American Falls drops 21-34 m (70-110 ft) to the rocks at its base along a crest about 260 m (850 ft) wide, with Bridal Veil Falls beside it. All three are in view from Table Rock and the promenade.

Journey Behind the Falls takes an elevator about 125 ft down through the rock to tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls, and it is open all year. The Skylon Tower stands 520 ft from its base with its deck 775 ft above the gorge. Further along the Niagara Parkway sit the Floral Clock, the Whirlpool Aero Car (C$25 (about $17.65), April to November) and the White Water Walk (C$21 (about $14.80), April to November).

Three Ways to Ride

See Sight runs 7-seat Mercedes vans from a central pickup at 120 Bremner Blvd, with tickets already in the price. Truexperiences uses a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for 15 at most, 8 on average, with a dedicated driver and a separate licensed guide, meeting at the Fairmont Royal York on Front Street. Chariots of Fire and Niagara Day Tour run coaches from Ripley's Aquarium at 288 Bremner Blvd, and Chariots of Fire seats up to 44.

Queen Tour, BG Tours, Toronto Bus Co, King and Airlink run coaches with downtown and Mississauga pickup points. The private Toyota Sienna from Flexible Tours collects you at your own address.

Which One Fits

Fewer seats mean shorter stops and the tickets already in the price, as on the See Sight van and the Truexperiences Sprinter. The big coach is the lowest price per seat, with Queen Tour from $52 and Airlink from $51. The private tour sets its own pace with no time limit at the Falls and pickup at your door.

The trade-offs are laid out in the private tour guide.

Staying for the Lights and Fireworks

For most of the year the day tours head back to Toronto before the lights come on. One tour stays for them.

What Is on After Dark

The Falls are lit every night of the year from dusk. Fireworks go up over the Falls at 10:00 PM nightly from May 15 to October 12, weather permitting. The Winter Festival of Lights runs from November 14 to January 10 and is free.

The problem for day visitors is the clock. Most Niagara Falls day tours from Toronto are back in the city between 5:30 and 7:00 PM, because the drive is about 131 km each way. That is well before the lights come on. The one exception is the evening tour, which leaves Toronto at 1:00 PM, gives you 3 hours of free time at the Falls and gets you back around 11:30 PM.

The Tour That Stays for It

The Niagara Falls Evening Tour with Fireworks leaves 20 Bay Street at 1:00 PM and returns about 11:30 PM. It runs with fewer than 23 passengers and needs a minimum of 2 people per booking. The from price is $78.70 for the standard package with no boat, dinner or Journey Behind the Falls.

Higher packages add the boat, Journey Behind the Falls, a Fallsview buffet dinner and, on the top option, the Skylon Tower. If the fireworks are the reason you go, pick a date between May 15 and October 12.

  • Departure 1:00 PM from 20 Bay Street, return about 11:30 PM
  • 3 hours of free time at the Falls
  • Fireworks nightly at 10:00 PM from May 15 to October 12, weather permitting

Adding Niagara-on-the-Lake and a Winery

Three group tours and the private tour add the old town at the mouth of the Niagara River, and one of them includes a winery tasting.

How the Wine-country Options Differ

The Toronto Bus Co. tour at $77 includes a winery tasting and a stop in Niagara-on-the-Lake with shopping and free time. Ontario's legal drinking age is 19, so bring ID. An optional 3-course lunch overlooking the Falls at Table Rock House Restaurant or Queen Victoria Place Restaurant costs extra. The King Transportation tour at $69 pairs 3 hours at the Falls with the Whirlpool, the Floral Clock and Niagara-on-the-Lake, with wine tasting listed as an option without a stated price. The Truexperiences Sprinter at $183.56 has the boat already in the price and adds leisure time in the town. The private Toyota Sienna tour from $330.49 goes wherever you ask, wineries and the town included.

Niagara-on-the-Lake counts 40 wineries and calls icewine the region's world-renowned dessert wine. The honest trade is time: every kilometre along the Niagara Parkway toward the town comes out of your hours at the Falls, and the tours that add the town state 3 hours at the Falls or do not state a figure at all.

Is the Second Stop Worth It

If you want both the Falls and a taste of wine country in one day, the tour with the tasting included is the simplest choice, because the tasting and the town stop are in the $77 from price. If the Falls matter more than the town, a day tour without the second stop gives you 3 to 4 hours at the water. Decide which half of the day you are buying before you compare prices.

  • 40 wineries in the town's countryside
  • Drinking age in Ontario is 19
  • Queen Street is the town's main street

Without a Tour: GO Train or Car

You can reach the Falls from Toronto without a tour, by train or by car. Here is what each way costs and where each one falls short.

Niagara Falls station, the end of the GO train alternative to a Niagara Falls tour from Toronto

The GO Train

How much does it cost to take a train from Toronto to Niagara Falls? GO Transit does not publish a flat fare, because fares are distance-based and paid with a PRESTO card or a contactless card. The trips run all year from Union Station, with the most trains on weekends. Weekday Niagara service has been cut back, so check the timetable for your date. The full detail is in the Toronto to Niagara Falls train guide.

Two things catch train travellers. The Niagara Falls station sits in the north of the city, away from the Falls, so you need the WEGO bus to close the gap: a 24-hour pass costs C$16 (about $11.30) for an adult. And the train does not stop at the Whirlpool, the Floral Clock or Table Rock the way a coach does.

Driving Yourself

The drive from Union Station to Table Rock at the Horseshoe Falls is 131 km by the QEW, about 1 hour 40 minutes with no traffic. Traffic is the variable: queues are worst on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading to Niagara and on Sunday evenings heading back. Falls Parking Lot A across from Table Rock costs C$31.86 (about $22.50) a day plus HST and allows re-entry.

It sits next to the main WEGO transfer hub, so you can park once and ride.

The Best Time for a Niagara Falls Tour from Toronto

The Falls run all year. The boat does not, and that single fact changes what a tour includes in the cold months.

What Changes with the Season

The boat cruise is seasonal. Niagara Parks puts the season at April to November, but the tour listings give their own dates: the Queen Tour boat runs daily May 8 to November 30, See Sight says May to November on its premium tour and May to December on the helicopter tour, and BG Tours swaps from December 1 to April 30. Every tour replaces the boat when it is closed, with Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Takes Flight or the Power Station and Tunnel. Journey Behind the Falls itself is open every day of the year. The Niagara Falls in winter guide lists the swaps tour by tour.

Weather swings hard across the year. Average highs at Niagara Falls run from 1 C (33 F) in January to 27 C (81 F) in July. Fireworks fly nightly at 10:00 PM from May 15 to October 12, and the Winter Festival of Lights runs November 14 to January 10.

The Month to Pick

For the boat, the fireworks and long daylight in one trip, late May or September fits best, with highs around 19 C (67 F) in May. For the lit Falls with free light displays, the Winter Festival of Lights window from November 14 works, as long as you accept that the boat is replaced and you dress for a high near 3 C (38 F).

A Day on the Most-Reviewed Tour, Step by Step

The Queen Tour is the most reviewed Niagara Falls tour from Toronto, with a 4.8 rating from 4,049 reviews. Here is how its listing lays out the day.

  1. 8:00 AM

Pickup in Downtown Toronto or Mississauga

The coach collects you at one of 10 pickup points across downtown Toronto and Mississauga, including the Fairmont Royal York, the Chelsea Hotel Toronto and Sankofa Square. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before departure.

  2. Morning

    The Drive Down the QEW

The route covers about 131 km each way, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes without traffic. The licensed Niagara Parks guide narrates on the way.

  3. Late morning

Seasonal Stops at the Whirlpool and the Power Stations

The listing adds seasonal stops at the Niagara Whirlpool and the hydroelectric power stations. It does not fix the order of the stops.

  4. Midday

3 to 4 Hours at the Falls with the Guide

The listing gives 3 to 4 hours at the Falls. Lunch is not included, so you buy it there, with plenty of dining options around Table Rock.

  5. Afternoon

Boat and Journey Behind the Falls on the Higher Packages

Package 1 is guide, transport and free time only. Package 2 adds the Niagara City Cruises boat. Package 3 adds the boat plus Journey Behind the Falls with skip-the-line access to the tunnels and viewing balconies.

  6. 5:30 PM

    Back in Toronto

The listing gives about 10 hours in total and a return to the pickup points around 5:30 PM.

Before You Leave Toronto

Five things to do and four to skip, each tied to how these tours actually work.

Do

  • Do check which package includes the boat before you pay, because on most tours the from price buys only the coach seat, the guide and free time, and the boat sits in a higher package or a cash add-on.
  • Do bring cash if your tour sells tickets on the day, because BG Tours takes cash only for add-ons from the guide: the boat at $55, Journey Behind the Falls at $30 and the Skylon Tower at $23.
  • Do take your passport only if you plan to walk across the Rainbow Bridge to the US side on your own, because every group tour stays on the Canadian side and crosses no border.
  • Do wear shoes that can get wet, because the boat deck and the lower platform at Journey Behind the Falls both get soaked, and a poncho comes with the boat ticket but not with your footwear.
  • Do book the Niagara Falls Evening Tour with Fireworks if you want the lit Falls, because day tours are back in Toronto between 5:30 and 7:00 PM, before dusk.

Don't

  • Don't expect the boat outside its season, because it runs roughly spring to late autumn and each listing swaps in another ticket, such as Journey Behind the Falls or Niagara Takes Flight, when it is closed.
  • Don't assume lunch is included, because nearly every listing excludes it. The BG Tours listing contradicts itself, so budget for lunch regardless.
  • Don't plan a US-side visit on a group tour, because no tour here crosses the Rainbow Bridge, and the US side and its Maid of the Mist boat need a passport.
  • Don't cut your return close to an evening plan in Toronto, because QEW traffic varies and queues are worst on Sunday evenings heading back.

Is a Niagara Falls Tour from Toronto Worth It

The honest ledger for a guided day trip against going on your own.

What we genuinely like

  • No driving the QEW yourself, where Friday and Sunday queues stretch the 1 hour 40 minute drive
  • No C$31.86 (about $22.50) a day plus HST for Falls Parking Lot A
  • A licensed Niagara Parks guide on the coach tours and stops at the Whirlpool, the Floral Clock and the power stations that a train traveller misses
  • Pickups in downtown Toronto from 8:00 AM, including 10 points on the most reviewed tour, so no car rental needed

The honest downsides

  • You get 3 to 4 hours at the Falls inside an 8 to 10 hour day, and the drive takes most of the rest
  • Upgrade packages raise the from price, and on some tours the boat, Journey Behind the Falls and Skylon Tower are cash add-ons bought from the guide on the day
  • Group timing is fixed: leave when the coach leaves, return when it returns

Who it's NOT for: Not for travellers who want unlimited time at the Falls, which on a group tour only the private minivan offers.

Which Tour Fits You

If You want the most reviewed day tour with the most pickup points

Take the Queen Tour day tour, 4.8 from 4,049 reviews, 10 pickup points from 8:00 AM, from $52 with the boat and Journey as upgrades. Full detail on the Queen Tour day tour page.

If You want the lowest price

Take the Airlink day tour from the airport hotels at $51, leaving about 10:30 AM with 2.5 hours at the Falls.

If You want the boat already in the base price

Take the Truexperiences Sprinter tour at $183.56, rated 4.9 from 354 reviews, boat included, with 8 guests on average and a 9:30 AM start.

If You want every headline ticket in one price

Take the See Sight premium van tour at $136.45, with the boat, Journey Behind the Falls and the Skylon Tower included for 7 seats.

If You want wine country and a winery tasting

Take the Toronto Bus Co. wine-country day at $77, with the tasting and Niagara-on-the-Lake in the price.

If You want the fireworks

Take the Niagara Falls evening tour from $78.70, leaving at 1:00 PM and back about 11:30 PM, or compare the rest in the table above.
